“Professional journalists should recognize that their first obligation is to the public.”

By constantly seeking the truth and reporting anything that is wrong we give the audience fairness. We give the sources and anyone involved in the story fairness. We need to seek the stories out with compassion and not be stereotypical in any way.

For visual journalists, they need to respect the pictures that they have taken. Again, try to be humble when dealing with subjects. Editing should maintain the integrity of the original photo. Journalists should treat the subjects with respect as well.

Some journalists standards are as follows:

-Accuracy

-Honesty

-Fairness

-Attribution

“If the quote comes from another news outlet, the journalist must credit it.”

Ethics of journalism include disclosure. We need to tell our readers why we got the story and where we got it. Including personal references or experiences is okay because the reader deserves the details and maybe why you feel that way about the issue. Writers shouldn’t ask for money from sources. Its different, however, if the source is an employer.

Journalists should seek out the truth and test the information to make sure it is accurate. Identifying sources in detail whenever possible is a must. The reader’s deserve as much information as possible.  Seeking out different stories gives journalists an edge. They get to tell each story, even the ones that are accused of wrongdoing.

We need to treat our readers fairly. Wether it be online, in the newspaper, or through the radio or t.v., they are entitled to the whole story’s truth as best as we can comprehend it. Correcting errors is ideal if we find out that something was recorded wrong.
